I have no problems with the volunteers and I make that point throughout the post. I criticize the NFL and how they take advantage of volunteers as well as the taxpayers.

I get what you’re saying, but it’s still a semi-free country; individuals are still allowed to spend their days doing whatever they like (within certain limits imposed by the criminal code) and that means people are free to choose stupid things. The Super Bowl volunteers are *volunteers*, they freely *chose* to spend a week out in the cold to the greater glory of the NFL and the city’s reputation instead of whatever they’d be doing normally–earning wages, watching TV, snarking on the internets, deviant sexual behavior, baking cookies…. I’m guessing a lot of them thought getting a jacket you can’t buy in stores and the chance to meet a celebrity was payment enough to put off those activities for a week. I wouldn’t do it, you wouldn’t do it, but a lot of people wanted to do it. Ain’t that America.

IndyPride, you’re a dick. The NFL comes to every town and sucks the revenue stream during Super Bowl. Sure, it’s good for the merchants, hotels, restaurants and bars.

However, cities vying to host a Super Bowl are like high school cheer leaders wanting to get screwed by the team quarterback, and willingly bend over and take it up the ass. Until that stops, the NFL will continue to steamroll any town they come to with a Super Bowl.

Of course it is not a capitalist conspiracy. As a conservative, I’m 110% for capitalism and free enterprise. The NFL does not practice real capitalism. How many companies use volunteers? Does Lilly? Does Ford? Turn down your emotions and read the post again and click on the links. You might learn how the NFL is taking the taxpayer to the cleaners.

You discredit the volunteers (of whom I am one) who don’t see themselves as roadkill for NFL owners, but instead as people proud of our city and more than happy to donate our time to share it with others.

People seem to lump these “top 1%, bottom 20%”-ers into some sort of static group that never changes, with the rich getting richer and the poor staying poor forever. Mobility between classes is one of the most amazing aspects of a free market system that seems to be lost on the OWS crowd.

Really? It’s not about the pay grade? The most oft-sited reason for #ows that I’ve seen is income inequality and people “paying their fair share” or the “rich getting richer” by taking advantage of poor little Joe Citizen who apparently shoulders no blame for taking a mortgage out on a house he couldn’t afford (and yes, I fully understand that’s not true in 100% of the cases but it certainly is true in many that I’ve personally come across).

And if it’s about “state insiders against outsiders” why are we occupying Wall St? Shouldn’t we be occupying Pennsylvania Avenue instead? Can you honestly tell me the tens-of-thousands of hardworking employees that work in those firms whom you’re lumping together with the few actual criminals are more to blame than an elected official that allows himself to be corrupted just so he or she can get reelected?

Great article . . . and I think that people lose sight of the fact that the (now) old saw, “It’s the economy stupid” really was an axiom of message discipline for Bill Clinton to avoid at all costs any consideration of the moral and cultural catastrophic-ness of him and his candidacy.
